- Crossed from Kerrang!'s 21 best US metalcore albums, Revolver's 10 most influential, the RateYourMusic metalcore chart, the Album of the Year decade lists and the Louder and Metal Injection retrospectives, 1991–2024.
- Mathcore is treated as a branch of metalcore rather than a genre apart: Converge, Dillinger, Botch and Norma Jean are the technical foundation, and every ranking files them here.
- Deathcore is deliberately held to four entries — Suicide Silence, Whitechapel, Thy Art Is Murder, Lorna Shore. It is a neighbouring genre deep enough to deserve its own top later, the same treatment dub and ska got under reggae.
- The United States take 72%, and that is the shape of the thing: metalcore grew out of American hardcore, and only the 2010s British wave (Architects, Bring Me the Horizon, While She Sleeps, Bury Tomorrow) and Australia (Parkway Drive, Northlane, Polaris) balance it.
- At most three albums per artist — Converge, Dillinger, Architects, Bring Me the Horizon, Parkway Drive, Every Time I Die, Knocked Loose and While She Sleeps are at the cap.
- Left out, or claimed by another shelf: Lamb of God and Trivium beyond Ascendancy (groove and thrash), Turnstile and Soul Glo (hardcore, already on the punk shelf), Refused and At the Drive-In (post-hardcore), Sleep Token, Emmure, Attack Attack!, Wage War.
