  • Crossed from Rolling Stone's 100 greatest punk albums, RateYourMusic charts and per-scene canons (proto-punk, CBGB, class of '77, post-punk, hardcore, riot grrrl, revivals), 1968–2022.
  • At most two albums per artist — stricter than the rock top: Clash, Ramones, Stooges, Wire, Fugazi, Green Day and IDLES are capped.
  • Studio albums only, no compilations or live records — Singles Going Steady, Complete Discography and 13 Songs sit out. One assumed exception: Kick Out the Jams.
  • Boundaries: grunge stays on the rock shelf (Nevermind, Live Through This), garage blues too (The White Stripes); Talking Heads only appear with 77.
  • Narrowly missed: Give 'Em Enough Rope, Sandinista!, My War, Plastic Surgery Disasters, Static Age, A Hero's Death…
